Fiction and reality
Over the years, Fiction Factory staff have developed their very own vocabulary. It can be confusing to people unfamiliar with it. Our Fiction Dictionary, known as the Fictionary, lists names of all our machines and workshops.
(Caress) To clean, especially the machine park.
(Altendorf valley) Place where our Altendorf slide tables reside. We have two now!
A coffeepot that serves up a very potent brew.
(Bake) To weld.
(Brick) According to Chris (while reading out the horoscope) this is a zodiac sign. Can be construed as love for the company: the brick motif is part of the Fiction Factory house-style.
(Beehive) Fiction helps the busy bees in the North of Amsterdam.
(Shed for tulip bulbs) This is the Wikkelhouse workshop and our warehouse. The name refers to a piece of family history.
(Cream) See: Zalf.
Unfortunately deceased, but not forgotten. The Renault Kangoo, used to be yellow and looked like Clarence, the cross-eyed lion from the ’60’s series Daktari.
Deutsche Industrie Norm. Happily displayed on an enormous A0-poster at Niek’s desk.
This is where we used to collect the scrap metal. But now he is retired.
(Egg) Sometimes Chris, our metal specialist, treats us all to fried eggs for lunch.
Very big (closed) semi-trailer for trucks.
(Party committee) A special committee that is predominantly busy with the difficult task of keeping its activities a secret.

Besides working as sustainable as possible, properly separating our waste and generating our own energy, we are increasingly working on sustainable and circular projects.
(Flannel-grey) A particular shade of white.
(Minced cow) Beef tartare.
Our VW Transporter van, previously owned by Hade.

(Hummus) The pink one with beetroot.

(Small box) Our über-functional multipurpose homemade toolbox, also used as stool or ladder.
(Foot and Mouth, literally ‘claw pain’) Occasional result of a turning chainsaw or a hammered finger.
(Inbetween job) See: Spoedje.
(Cakeyday) Every Wednesday morning our baker delivers fresh cakes and apple turnovers.
Sturdy prefab wall, designed for rapid construction and disassembly. Named after its spiritual father.
(Upper left) Yell to announce that a grilled cheese sandwich is ready. Refers to its location under the grill. In the same series: upper middle, upper right, lower left, lower middle and lower right.
Mascot and part-time watchdog.
Guillotine used to cut sheet steel.
(MIG/MAG welding) The welding procedure most frequently used by the Fiction Factory. MIG/MAG stands for Metal Inert Gas/Metal Active Gas. It is a form of arc welding like TIG-lassen. During welding there is a continuous feed of welding wire.
(Kitchen garden) We also build our own veggies. Ah well, we do our best in greenhouses and wooden boxes in our yard. We serve the veggies during lunch at our salade bar.
(Sub-floor) Sectional system used to construct a strong, level sub-floor. Home made.
A big tidy shed where we store materials from projects that can be reused in new projects. Let’s close the circle!
Very robust work table, own design. Also suitable for stage construction etc.
(Guinea pig) New employee during trial period.
Sustainable projects require a new way of thinking and that is where our creativity comes in handy.
Very large staple gun. Air discharged during stapling transforms your coiffure to resemble that of the famous pop singer.
(Measuring tape) Status symbol.
This department, also known as ‘wonder loft’, is engaged in making the impossible possible. This is the domain of 3D printers, our laser machine, inventions and many specials.
(Comes from the german word ‘schmutzen’ = To make dirty) To paint a large surface.
(Soup) During winters we love to make fresh soup on Thursdays.
(Rush job) Assignment that needs to be completed within a shorter time than usual. Also known as: Klusje-tussendoor.
The database in which we keep track of materials that come back from projects, so that we can use them more quickly in new projects. Named after its maker, Johannes Ok, and also our Dutch version of a stocklist.
(Cow powder) Dehydrated milk.

Tafelfrees (Table top milling machine) CNC–controlled woodworking machine. Has a big-brother called Tweo who can mill 3-dobjects
(TIG welding) Tungsten Inert Gas. Welding technique which generally guarantees a more subtle result than MIG/MAG. Very well suited for the welding of thin material. During TIG welding, heat is generated by describing an arc between a tungsten electrode and the work piece.
(Topkip door) Most frequently used exit door, orange coloured and faces our neighbour – you might have guessed it – Topkip.
Certain form of screw-head, similar to a Phillips head or slot head but more practical and pleasant to work with.
Our 5-axled 3D millingmachine. Theo’s big brother.
(Contract out) On occasion we contract out to specialists in our network.
(Vacuum table) Used for glueing flat, bent, and 3-dimensional moulded products from wood, veneer, laminate, plastics en minerals together.
(Provisional-definite) Status of (studies/drawings/prototypes) of a new product: last, up-to-date version.
Our ultimate dishwasher. Solely beat 2 huge dishwashing machines.
A house wrapped from so called goldboard. On a special trailer, around a huge houseshaped-mold we wrap cardboard. These modules can be composed as a complete house, work or livingspace.
(Profit sharing) Piece of pie.
(Ointment). Mayonnaise. Also known as: Crème (Cream).
(Sundial) this indicator shows us how much energy we collect with our 1000 solar panels. Let the sun shine!
